Ah, the joys of modern technology. We can access an entire world of knowledge, entertainment, and cat videos with only a few touches on our trusty smartphones. Yet, let’s face it, we all know what happens when we start scrolling: hours pass and we’re not closer to reaching our goals or improving our lives.

So, to help you break free from the never-ending cycle of smartphone scrolling, here are three fun and productive things you can do instead.

Read a book.

Yes, I know, “reading” is a bit of a foreign concept in this day and age. But believe me when I say that there is a whole world of literature out there just waiting to be found. There is a book for everyone, whether you prefer fiction, nonfiction, or something in between.

What’s more, the best part? Reading, as opposed to mindlessly browsing through social media, stimulates your brain and can increase your vocabulary, critical thinking skills, and even your empathy. You also get to amaze your buddies with your newfound knowledge and refined taste in literature. Win-win!

Learn a new skill.

Have you ever wanted to learn to play the guitar, speak a foreign language, or knit your own warm winter hat? Now is the ideal time to get started. You can find tutorials, classes, and workshops on just about anything you can think of thanks to the infinite resources available online (but not on your phone!).

You’ll not only learn a new talent to wow your pals, but you’ll also increase your confidence and give your brain a much-needed workout. And who knows what else? You might just uncover a hidden talent you had no idea you possessed.

Go outside.

Sure, I understand that the big outdoors can be scary at first. But trust me when I say that once you get over the initial shock of sunlight and fresh air, you’ll wonder why you ever spent so much time indoors.

Being outside can do wonders for your physical and mental health, whether you go for a jog, take a walk, or simply sit and enjoy the environment. Not to mention the possibility of meeting new people, seeing intriguing wildlife, or discovering a hidden gem in your own city.

Conclusion

So there you have it — three alternatives to browsing through your smartphone. These activities will not only be more enjoyable and productive than mindlessly looking at a screen, but they may even make you a better person.
